A Canadian non-profit protecting women journalists, human rights defenders, and civic leaders worldwide with a current focus on Afghanistan.
Women Organization for Rights, Dignity, and Speech (WORDS) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-religious organization based in Canada. The organization operates in accordance with the laws of its country of registration and is guided by international human rights standards, including principles of freedom of expression, equality, and non-discrimination.
WORDS was established to respond to the growing repression of women's voices, particularly women journalists, human rights defenders, and civic leaders living under restrictive regimes or in exile. We believe that the ability of women to speak freely, participate in public life, and lead within their communities is fundamental to democratic societies and sustainable peace.
WORDS exists to ensure that women's voices are not silenced by fear, displacement, censorship, or systemic discrimination.
WORDS is grounded in the principles that underpin free, equal, and democratic societies. These values shape every decision we make and every relationship we build.
The right of every woman to speak, report, and participate in public life without fear.
Equal standing for women in media, civil society, and the institutions that shape society.
Protection against exclusion based on gender, ethnicity, religion, or political view.
Every woman we work with is treated with respect, agency, and confidentiality.
